Checking
Q. How can I get a copy of a
check I wrote?
A. When you are signed up for Internet Banking,
you can see copies of most checks that were written
out. To sign up for Internet Banking, click here.
If there is a draft you can not obtain a copy
of please contact one of our offices and we will
see if we can get one for you. See the next question
for more information.
Q. Why can I get copies of some
of my checks and others I can't?
A. Checks that are presented for payment directly
at one of our CMFCU offices are called "ON
US" drafts. Most often, these drafts are
withdrawn immediately out of the member's accounts
at CMFCU. Since these drafts have already been
paid out of the members accounts, they do not
get sent to a clearing house for payment. Since
"ON US" drafts are processed differently,
CMFCU does scan and obtain a copy of them. However,
you are unable to see the draft through Internet
Banking because of this difference in processing.
If there is a draft you can not obtain a copy
of please contact one of our offices and we will
see if we can get one for you.
Q. What do the numbers at the
bottom of my check mean?
A.The numbers at the bottom of a check are called
the MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition)
Line. A MICR Line can contain the following:
|
On Us Symbol
The on us symbol tells the check sorter
that the numbers between these symbols identify
your account number, your financial institution's
branch number, and probably the check number.
Transit symbol
The transit symbol tells the check sorter
that the numbers between these symbols identify
the institution upon which the check is
drawn
Amount Symbol
The two amount symbols tell the check sorter
that the numbers between the symbols are
the amount of the check. Generally, this
field will be blank because the amount is
normally added later by the financial institution.
Dash Symbol
The dash is sometimes used as a separator
within the On Us field, although reader/sorter
manufacturers discourage its use because
of detection problems. Some financial institutions
still use the dash to separate the financial
institution branch number from the account
number.

Q. Why did I get charged an
NSF fee when my balance was sufficient to cover
the check?
A. There may have been a hold on your account
for a pending debit card transaction. When you
use your debit card, the merchant verifies that
there are funds available for the transaction
to go through. This places a hold on those funds
until the transaction actually gets posted to
your account. This may take a few days in some
cases, depending on the merchant. Another possibility
is that sometimes deposited funds require a hold
be placed on them. For example, a check drawn
on another institution that is deposited into
your CMFCU account, may not be available until
the check clears.
